The Tancarvilles had been made hereditary Chamberlains of Normandy. Not long after William of Normandy was born, his father, Duke Robert, decided to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and before he left, called the powerful men of Normandy together and presented William as his heir. Robert died on his journey and at the age of seven, William became Duke of Normandy. His guardian was Raoul d'Abbetot de Tancarville, hereditary Chamberlain of Normandy, who also was the founder of Boscherville Abbey in the year 1023.
