He was of age in the fortieth year of reign of Henry III when he was called to knighthood as Sir John. Sir John took part with other Barons in the wars against Henry III and was taken prisoner in April 1264 at the battle of Northhampton, after which his manors of Castle-Carlton and Cavenby in Lincolnshire which he held by right of his wife Joan, were taken by the King. He was released when the Prince was later taken prisoner and his manors restored.
