Descendants of Guiscard d'Hauteville :
The information about the Spencer line comes from a variety of sources, some of which are questionable. In particular, the generations before John Spencer (b. 1505) have not been proved to be part of the family line. In addition, there are unproved connections (noted where they occur) in the generations preceding John.
No doubt the name Spencer was derived from an occupation. Within a castle or large manor, the majority of individuals were referred to by their function. Those who were closest to the King or Lord of the Manor were held in high esteem. One such honored position was the "spencer" a Middle English word (derived from the Middle French word "despense") or chamberlain, who was in charge of all property, finances, and household affairs. "Le despenser" was the one who made decisions regarding the household. According to some sources, the despenser for William the Conqueror was an early ancestor of the Spencer line, Robert d'Abbetot. However, the "Battle Abbey role" of companions of William the Conqueror in 1066, list not only Abbetot, but a William Despenser, and someone designated as "Le Chamberlain de Tancarville". The matter of the early generations is not settled. The name Spencer evolved by appending "Le Despenser" as part of an earlier name or being adopted directly as an occupational surname.
Very little is known about the family before Tancred. The family was already part of the Norman nobility as the Tancarville family castle is described as more ancient than 900 AD, located near Lillebonne, France, about 30 miles southeast of Le Havre. The ruins are still visible.
